Back in the day, if someone said something that you agreed with, a simple “I agree” sufficed. Heck, even a firm “Yes, that’s correct!” would’ve done. So I struggle, today, with the new response of agreement that all the kids are throwing around, which goes: “I know, right!?”
Examples:
Person 1: I really enjoy Downton Abbey.
Person 2: I know, right!?
or
Person 1: This extra-low-GI-no-sugar-or-taste rice cake with free colonoscopy is very good for you.
Person 2: I know, right!?
The main reason this bugs me is simply this: If I state a fact, thought or opinion, I believe I do – in fact – agree with myself on said topic. By agreeing with me (“I know…”), and then implying that I should affirm my agreement with myself (“right!?”), leaves me torn, and ridiculously confused.
Like Anne Frank put so well: “I simply can’t build my hopes on a foundation of confusion…”
I know, right!?
